A punch list is the itemized record of unfinished or deficient work identified near the end of a project — a scratched door, a missing cover plate, paint touch-ups, a fixture that doesn't work. It's generated as the job approaches substantial completion, typically during a walkthrough with the owner and architect.
Working the punch list to zero is what stands between the team and final payment, retainage release, and closeout. It's unglamorous but it's where reputations are made: a clean, fast punch closeout tells an owner you finish what you start.
